Are Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes pressing pause on their friendship? Or was their decision to sit in separate suites at last night’s Kansas City Chiefs game a neutral choice?
Fans were left pondering these questions after the two most-famous Chiefs WAGs (that’s “wives and girlfriends”—yes, football season is back) were photographed celebrating their men apart from each other at the Chiefs’ home opener against the Baltimore Ravens on September 5.
You’re so not ready for it.
Brittany Mahomes, who is married to Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and Swift grew close during the 2023-2024 season, when Swift began dating boyfriend Travis Kelce, the Chiefs’ tight end. And this wasn’t just a casual “our boyfriends are besties” kind of friendship, either. They choreographed celebratory handshakes, took selfies together, and were spotted hanging out away from the stadium on several occasions—often, sans their men.
Most recently, the Mahomeses celebrated with Swift and her crew at the pop star’s Rhode Island compound, where she threw a birthday bash for her other blonde bestie, Blake Lively. Patrick, Brittany, and the couple’s children were photographed arriving at the house, along with several other A-listers, including Bradley Cooper and Gigi Hadid.
However, a few days after the Blake Birthday Soiree, it was revealed that Brittany Mahomes “liked” a pro–Donald Trump Instagram post, and Swifties were none too pleased. Though she appeared to unlike the post, Mahomes took to her Instagram Stories to call out the “haters.” A few days later, she appeared to double down, sharing an X post from Christian blogger Shane Pruitt which read, “Contrary to the tone of the world today…You can disagree with someone, and still love them. You can have differing views, and still be kind.” Mahomes added, “Read that again!” on her Story.
Mahomes is doubling down.
Taylor Swift hasn’t yet endorsed a candidate for president; however, in 2020, she endorsed President Biden over President Trump, leading Swifties to believe that she’ll likely be sharing her endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris at some point closer to Election Day.
Fans, at least, seem to think that there’s some kind of beef brewing between Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes. On an Instagram post shared by Mahomes for her 29th birthday last week, commenters pretty much ignored the content of the post, instead using the comment section to declare themselves pro-Trump or pro-Harris. The top comment, with roughly 1,600 likes as of publishing, reads, “I’m with Taylor Swift, Kamala 2025!!!!” The second most-liked comment reads, “You just gained a new follower. Trump 2024.”
Just to reiterate, we have no idea whether or not Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes’s decision to occupy different suites was some kind of political statement. Mahomes, who is pregnant with her third child, might’ve just been feeling in need of space. Or maybe Swift, who just wrapped the European leg of her Eras Tour, was the one who felt like a breather might be good.
One thing I’m sure they agree on? The Chiefs’ win.
